Western Australia puts on strong presence at World Hydrogen Summit

Western Australia’s (WA) Minister for Energy and Decarbonisation Amber-Jade Sanderson recently attended the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam.

The Word Hydrogen Summit (WHS) is the renewable hydrogen industry’s most influential event where key sector insights are exchanged, and new partnerships are forged.

Team WA put on a strong showing at the Summit with Minister Sanderson and nine pioneering WA companies and organisations forming the core of the Australian presence at Rotterdam.

Invest and Trade WA also hosted an exhibition booth at the Australia Pavillon at WHS, showcasing WA’s strengths in clean energy including:

  • unmatched opportunities to generate renewable energy with large land mass, abundant sunshine and consistent winds;
  • hydrogen hubs in Kwinana, the Mid West and Pilbara;
  • strong government and industry collaboration; and
  • a proven track record in energy infrastructure and innovation.

During the Summit, Team WA delegates undertook site visits and engaged in conversations with potential investors, policymakers, and tech leaders to reaffirm the strategic role that WA can play in supplying green hydrogen, ammonia and green metals to key global markets.

These conversations were reinforced by Minister Sanderson’s keynote address at the Summit, where she outlined the WA Government’s plan to transform the State into a clean energy powerhouse.

“Our ambition to develop a world-class hydrogen industry remains stronger than ever,” said Minister Sanderson.

While in Rotterdam, Minister Sanderson also met with representatives from Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems and the Port of Rotterdam (PoR).

The WA Government has partnered with the Fraunhofer Institute and PoR on the Trilateral Hydrogen Hub Feasibility Study (TrHyHub).

The TrHyHub Study investigated the potential to deliver a clean energy supply chain between the Oakajee Strategic Industrial Area (SIA) and Germany.

The study found WA is well placed to export locally made green hydrogen and ammonia to Europe from the State's Mid West.

It also identified the Mid West's potential for large-scale renewable electricity generation, which could allow millions of tonnes of hydrogen to be produced per annum.
