Fostering friendship, the arts and economic cooperation with Sichuan
His Excellency Mr Wang Xiaohui, Party Secretary of Sichuan Province, led a delegation to Perth in May 2023, meeting with Premier Mark McGowan to discuss collaboration opportunities between both regions.
During the Party Secretary’s first trip to Western Australia, he visited the Western Australian Museum Boola Bardip, Parliament House and Tianqi Lithium Processing Plant in Kwinana.
An MOU was signed between Tourism WA and Sichuan Airlines to increase awareness of Western Australia as a premium destination and creating the foundation to increase visitation from the China market. The MOU aims to develop opportunities for new direct flights between Perth and China.The Premier had met with Sichuan Airlines on 20 April 2023 during his mission to China.
Western Australia and Sichuan Province have existing commercial and people to people links. The biggest Sichuan investment in Western Australia is the Tianqi Lithium Processing Plant in Kwinana. The refinery commenced production in July 2022 and cost about $1 billion to establish. Perth and Sichuan’s capital, Chengdu celebrated 10th Anniversary of their sister-city relationship in 2022.
Invest and Trade Western Australia also partnered with the WA branches of the Australia China Business Council and China Chamber of Commerce in Australia to host a business networking function for the Party Secretary and delegation in Perth at the Chinese Consulate-General in Perth.
The Western Australian Government understands the importance of strong and vibrant relationships with the people and governments of Asia, which will deliver jobs and economic prosperity for our state and strengthen our cultural connections.
A second MOU was signed between WA Museum, WA Museum Foundation and Tianqi Lithium, a significant investor into Western Australia.
This collaboration is another example of industry supporting initiatives benefiting the local community while promoting culture and the arts and people to people links.
