Western Australia and Singapore strengthen ties across innovation and health and medical life sciences

Stephen Dawson, Western Australia's (WA) Minister for Science and Innovation; Medical Research, has led a trade mission to Singapore to showcase WA’s growing medical technology (medtech) and innovation ecosystem.

The Minister’s visit coincides with the inaugural Life Science Intelligence (LSI) Asia Emerging Medtech Summit held in Singapore.

Run by US-based market intelligence firm Life Science Intelligence, LSI Asia brings together industry-leading startups, venture capital and private equity investors, and other key stakeholders from across the Asia-Pacific, the fastest-growing region in the global medtech industry.

WA-based companies OncoRes Medical and VeinTech both participated in LSIA Asia and presented their pioneering medtech innovations as part of the event's global pitch program. OncoRes Medical showcased its Elora scanning device that helps surgeons identify cancerous tissue during breast cancer removal surgeries, and VeinTech profiled its VeinWise device to improve success rates for the insertion of cannulas.

While at LSI Asia, the Minister took the opportunity to promote WA’s rapidly growing medtech ecosystem, highlighting:

  • The WA Government’s investment into the newly established Biomedical Precinct in Perth to support capital works, equipment and incentives targeting export-ready medical manufacturers

  • WA’s Future Health Research and Innovation Fund, including its new dedicated funding for health and medical venture capital through the WA Venture Capital Initiative

  • WA’s Clinical Trials Roadmap, which sets out a plan to establish a globally competitive clinical trials ecosystem; and

  • WA’s successful bid to host AusMedtech and AusMedtechInvest, Australia’s premier medtech conference, from 19-21 May 2026

During his time in Singapore, the Minister:

  • Hosted a roundtable lunch with key Singaporean Government agencies and publicly funded healthcare and medical research institutes to promote collaborative opportunities

  • Engaged leading venture capitalists and family offices to highlight investment opportunities in WA’s medtech and biotech sectors.

  • Visited the Yong Yoo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore where research collaboration between Western Australia and Singapore is underway; and

  • Visited Science Centre Singapore who has partnered with Scitech Perth to deliver public education programs on the Ningaloo Total Solar Eclipse.

Minister Dawson also met with representatives from the Action Community for Entrepreneurship (ACE) Singapore ahead of an inbound delegation of Singaporean medtech companies visiting WA in July to discuss opportunities for cross-pollination and partnerships to improved health outcomes for both WA and Singapore.  The ACE delegation comprises the first collaboration stemming from a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation and ACE Singapore to elevate innovation ecosystems in WA and Singapore through enhanced knowledge-sharing and exchange opportunities.

Minister Dawson’s visit to Singapore comes shortly after WA Premier Roger Cook’s first overseas trade mission to the Lion City late last month.

The two visits reinforce WA’s commitment to the State’s longstanding relationship with Singapore and the two regions’ joint priorities to foster opportunity and collaboration across the priority sectors of medical technology and innovation.
