Warm WA welcome for Hockeyroos and Chinese national women’s hockey team

Invest and Trade WA was honoured to host the Hockeyroos and the Chinese national women’s hockey team at a welcome reception in Perth’s iconic Kings Park.

The Chinese team was in Western Australia to play the Hockeyroos in a three-game Test series, organised by Hockey WA.

The opening match took place at Bunbury Hockey Stadium on 23 March, followed by two matches at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University on 25 and 26 March.

The Bunbury match marked the first hockey international in the South West region since the Hockeyroos played Great Britain in February 2016.

The reception celebrated the strong sporting and people-to-people ties between Western Australia and China, in line with Western Australia’s Asian Engagement Strategy 2019-30 - Our future with Asia.

In attendance at the reception were the Hon. David Templeman MLA, Minister for Culture and the Arts; Sport and Recreation; International Education; Heritage, Mr Long Dingbin, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Perth, Mr Fabian Ross, Chief Executive Officer of Hockey WA, Mr James Clarke, President of the Australia China Business Council WA Branch, and other key representatives from local Chinese business and community organisations.

The reception also provided an opportunity to acquaint the Chinese players with a furry Australian friend.

The Western Australian and Chinese representatives both acknowledged the important role of sports in building and maintaining diplomatic relations.
